RAPID
RAPID (Revitalising Areas by Planning, Investment & Development) is a focused Government initiative to target the 45 most disadvantaged urban areas & provincial towns in the country.

Strand 1 was launched in 25 urban areas in February 2001 and Strand 2 was extended to 20 provincial towns in February 2002. Tuam is one of the provincial towns.

RAPID aims to:
  • Increase the investment made by Government departments and state agencies in the 45 communities;
  • Improve the delivery of public services through integration and coordination
  • Enhance the opportunities for communities to participate in the strategic improvement of their areas.

RAPID is implemented locally by a cross-sectoral Area Implementation Team (AIT) and is supported by a RAPID Coordinator.

The County Development Board manages the programme locally.

The RAPID National Monitoring Committee chaired by
Minister Eamon O Cuiv manages the programme nationally.

September Event

Tuam Business Watch

The inaugural meeting of Tuam Business Watch will be held at Tuam Garda Station on Wed 26th September at 2pm.

Background to Business Watch
Business Watch essentially involves a partnership between the Garda Síochána and the local business community to prevent and reduce crime through awareness of what can and needs to be done to reduce crime, alertness to what is happening in the locality and commitment to action. A scheme like Business Watch provides a very important channel of communication between the local business community and the Gardaí. In recent years the Garda Síochána have given a high priority to developing their involvement with the communities they serve. Equally, the increased awareness by the public of the role which they can play in crime prevention is to be welcomed. To develop this to its full potential, the Government places a high importance on initiatives such as Business Watch, Neighbourhood Watch and Community Alert.

The Tuam Business Watch initiative has evolved from the Garda Síochána ‘Prevention is Better than Cure’ workshop hosted by Tuam Chamber of Commerce in July of this year.

Tuam Chamber of Commerce would like to thank those members who have offered their services to support this valuable community effort.
